[Part 5 of 6] Secrets and lies. Everyone who is anyone in London is shocked and titillated by a gossip column reporting the scandalous tidbits of the social season of 1812. But no one suspects "The Magpie" is really Miss Marjorie Teague, the orphaned poor relation who hovers on the outskirts of high society as the companion to her debutante cousin.
Marjorie dons a boy's disguise and files an anonymous story in order to stop a deadly duel. But when the newspaper offers to pay for regular reports, she realizes she can earn enough money to support herself, and be free of her cruel aunt...as long as her identity as The Magpie remains secret.
When Captain Lord Findlay Drake returns from war to discover he's inherited an earldom, he plunges into the social whirl as the biggest prize on the Marriage Mart. Reluctantly doing his duty to preserve the family name, Fin's mission to marry is sidetracked and his curiosity piqued by Miss Teague a young lady who is totally ineligible...and totally unimpressed...by the new Earl.
When a newspaper publicizes Fin's imminent duel and sets a Bow Street Runner on his tail, he is determined to put a stop to the scandal-mongering Magpie.
If only he can discover who it is....
[AUTHOR'S NOTE This is a SERIAL novel, told in installments. Think of it like a mini-series! Rated PG for occasional very mild swearing (e.g. "damn") Part 5 is approximately 24,000 words. Part 6 (the finale!) will be released soon. Enjoy!]

What a fun read book five has been. The writing is humorous and witty. Only until next month for the finale. I like the way Ms. Hodge leaves the reader literally hanging on the hook until the next book. I like, even more, that we are not left twisting for too long. Only a few weeks. In book four, we are running down the road with Marjorie to get back to the Greville home before the vicious Valeria and the cowhearted Beatrice. This new book (five) begins as they all get in the door and all hell breaks loose. Another reason to like this series is because Ms. Hodge is a good writer. She has an eye (ear?) for descriptive language -- “His lordship was ever so polite and agreeable, Mrs Beasley,” the scullery maid offered. “I cut 'im up some ‘am an' slices orf that new loaf, and 'e said, 'thank you kindly,' 'e said.” Very nice! There's a definite presence of regency-isms/Heyerisms--- "thick as ankle-weavers" just to mention one.

Well, the Magpie's days are assuredly numbered as the thickened plot is definitely coming to a head. I hope Sir Steyn will get his comeuppance as well as Lady Greville, the Perfect Lucasta and that feckless Frederick. I hope the author will clear up the mystery regarding Marjorie's parentage. I totally disbelieve vicious Valeria's reportage regarding this story. I can't wait for July... And a definite beach read

The Magpie Masquerade Part 5 edition by Victoria Hodge Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

six books in the series. after reading the first i found myself drawn to read more and to find out the end,
I am disgusted with this tale. An only adequate story that would have been satisfying as a single read has become an annoyance because of this endless serial approach. Each time a new set of chapters arrives, I have forgotten what went before and any emotional investment in the characters and the story in general, is long gone. The ultimate frustration occurs when you get back into the rhythm of things and once again you are interrupted and expected to wait for the next installment. I will see it to the end ,but will never get hooked by this idiocy again. For shame!
Poor Maggie. She's getting it from all sides in Episode Five.. What a Regency soap opera we got here. Can't wait to see how it all ends in the next installment, Part 6. Great job so far.
As the story progresses, it became more convoluted and hard to believe. It had a very clever plot and I did enjoy, to a point. I am reviewing all 5 episodes at one time. Seemed the logical thing to do. Even tho the ending is not a secret,it's how they get there is the draw. Now have to wait for 6 till when, we don't know. Not happy about that. Probably will just file it and go on to another story.
THIS STORY WAS PRESENTED AS A SERIES, IT IS NOT. WHAT IT IS, IS CRAP. WHAT THEY DID WAS DICE UP A STORY AND SELL IT IN PARTS IN ORDER TO MAKE MUCH MORE MONEY FOR EACH SMALL PIECE RATHER THAN SELLING IT AS ONE STORY. THIS LITTLE PIECE HERE ACTUALLY STOPS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A CHASE. IF THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE ME WAIT WITH BATED BREATH FOR THE LAST THIRTY PAGE INSTALLMENT AND COSTS ANOTHER COUPLE DOLLARS, THEY MISSED THRIR MARK. NOT ONLY THAT I AM NOT GOING TO BUY THE LAST LITTLE PIECE OF THIS BOOK, NOR WILL I EVER BUY ANOTHER BOOK BY THIS AUTHOR!!!! I DON'T GET TOOK TO THE CLEANERS VERY OFTEN BUT THIS AUTHOR WON'T GET ME AGAIN!!!!!!!!
A sweet (PG) Regency romance with a spunky heroine, a dashing hero, and an intriguing story. Ideal for fans of Georgette Heyer-style regencies.
I can't imagine how poor Marjorie is going to overcome all the challenges she faces!
